future development
Patrick Terminals commenced a significant redevelopment program in 2005, to accommodate future trade growth and increasing container ship size. A further $608m is forecast to be undertaken between 2007-2010, which will effectively double terminal capacity at the ports of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Fremantle.
The longer term benefits of the expansion are expected to be significant, not only in providing capacity for growth into the future but in establishing a new level of labour and operational efficiency within the business.
As part of the redevelopment program, Patrick has invested in the latest post-panamax cranes, which will provide capability to service the larger post-panamax vessels expected to call Australian in the future. The quay cranes have a lift capacity under spreader of 65 tonnes, an outreach of 17 containers wide and ability to twin-lift. In Sydney, Patrick has acquired semi-automated rail mounted gantries (RMGs) to handle the new road/rail interface and support our strategy to increase rail movements (cost and environmental benefits). The gantries provide high speed container exchange for both road and rail and allow for 24 hour road and rail working through an intermediate stacking area between the legs of the RMG.
Port Botany
The site has been redeveloped, with the arrival of 5 RMG’s, to handle the road and rail interface. Capacity will increase from 700,000 TEU to 1,300,000 TEU by 2008..
Future capacity will be accommodated by a 400m extension of the berth and an additional 18 hectares of terminal area, when available
East Swanson Dock
Redevelopment work has focused on optimising land use, creating additional ground slots. Future development plans are being evaluated with the possible introduction of fast cycling semi-automated RMGs to compliment the straddle fleet. Rail terminal has been redeveloped, facilitating greater rail throughput.
Current redevelopment has increased terminal capacity from 900,000 to 1,200,000 TEU, with plans for a further increase to 1,500,000 + TEU by 2010.
Fisherman Islands
The AutoStrad terminal at Berths 7/9 has increased from 250,000 TEU to 500,000 TEU, with plans in place to increase terminal capacity of Berths up to 8/10 to 800,000 TEU post 2008.
Fremantle
Present terminal capacity is 300,000+ TEU. Progressive development of terminal capacity to meet demand, with future plans to convert to a straddle-based operation.
